Fish Pond Liners

A fishpond needs to be properly lined with a preformed, fixed or flexible liner. Preformed or rigid pond liners work best on small fishponds. They are more suitable when you do not have an area to dig. These kinds of ponds are a great alternative to the more costly concrete fishponds.

However, to create a fishpond shape that you like, you would need a flexible fishpond liner. These flexible liners are available in different measures of thickness - the thicker liners are more capable of resisting wear and tear. For the smaller fishponds, preformed liners are more advisable, and for the bigger fishponds, the flexible rubber liners would work better, as plastic liners could be harmful to the fish and plants in the long run.

If you would be creating a fishpond using a flexible rubber liner, you could get the pond’s length, width and depth and then multiply the greatest depth by three. You can then add the result to the width and length. This measurement would be able to cover the sides and the entire base, as well as leave a portion surrounding the sides that could be covered with stones and rocks to be able to secure the liner in place. If you would be choosing to use a preformed fishpond liner, then you would need to create a hole that that would fit the pond’s shape.

The use of synthetic liners are fine if it would just be for the smaller fishponds because the health of the fish and other living organisms is not challenged by the issues of micronutrient feeding. Soil additives like sodium bentonyte clays are a lot cheaper compared to synthetic liners. However, the drawback for using these soil additives would be their need for professional maintenance services.

Flexible rubber fishpond liners are much better than the fiberglass or concrete liners. Concrete fishponds are more expensive, as they require reinforcements, footings and a couple of layers of concrete. The construction of this kind of fishponds needs professional service and after some time, would begin to crack. With the arrival of the new synthetic and rubber fishpond liners, the labor associated with the mixing and shaping of concrete has become a thing of the past.
